PREFACETo have a fruitful and spiritually enriching Lenten season and preparation for Eastertide, I have put together for you scholarly and exegetical reflections on the Gospel readings for the Lectionary Year C (when we read from the Gospel of St. Luke) from first Sunday of Lent to Palm Sunday for your reading and meditation. On the First Sunday of Lent when we proclaim the temptation of Jesus (Luke 4:1-13), we examine the two key elements in the introductory verses of this passage that are critical in understanding the entire episode of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, namely “DESERT” OR “WILDERNESS” AND “FORTY DAYS” and so the theme “…being led…through the wilderness…for forty days” Luke 4: 1-2).On the Second Sunday of Lent when we proclaim at Mass the Transfiguration of Jesus during Prayer with three of His disciples (Peter, John and James) on a mountain (Luke 9:28-36), we examine why only Luke gives us the topic or subject of discussion between Jesus, Moses, and Elijah as “they were talking about Jesus’ ‘departure’ (exodon), ‘which was going to be accomplished in Jerusalem’” when the other Synoptic Gospels (namely, Matthew and Mark) excludes it. On the third Sunday of Lent, when we proclaim at Mass Jesus’ interpretation of the report that Pilate killed several Galileans and then mingled their blood with their sacrifices (Luke 13:1-9), we examine the common and easy explanation that “all calamities are due to divine punishment for sins” otherwise technically called “Divine retribution”.Do you know that “God’s love never reduces, diminishes, lessens or shrinks for His children even if they sinned” And that anyone (self-righteous) who expects God to lessen His love and blessings for His sinful children is rather reducing the relationship of God to a mere master-servant relationship. Do you also know that “Wrong choices in life otherwise called Sin always bring along tragic consequences of death and lose” but, which repentance always restores Also, are you aware that the dignity from being called a child God supersedes any other dignity Then read read the Homily for the Fourth Sunday of Lent, otherwise known as “Laetare” Sunday, a word which is taken from the Latin entrance antiphon for this Mass, meaning “Rejoice”, where we examine the Parable of the father and the two sons(Luke 15:1-3, 11-32).Furthermore, do you know that “whenever Sin surrounds us, voices and powers of condemnation and death surrounds and threatens us, but whenever we meet Jesus, voices and powers of forgiveness, acquittal and life surround us”. Are you also aware that the condemnatory voice of Sin is very loud, powerful and crippling, but there is a more powerful and surpassing voice of forgiveness, acquittal and life in Jesus Then read the Homily for the fifth Sunday of Lent, which is also the last Sunday before Holy Week, where we examine the passage of the “Woman caught in Adultery” in the Fourth Gospel(John 8:1-11).Finally, on Palm Sunday we examine two gospel passages, one before the procession and the other after the procession.May the Lord bless you with a fruitful, fulfilling, blessed and spiritually enriching Lenten season.
